What Is A Sports Physical Exam?
A sports physical exam, also known as a pre-participation physical examination (PPE), helps determine whether it’s safe for your child to participate in a particular sport. During this exam, our pediatricians at Heber Valley Pediatrics conduct a thorough assessment of your child’s overall health, focusing on their physical fitness and readiness to engage in sports activities.
The Purpose Of A Sports Physical Exam Is To:
- Identify potential health issues
- Ensure safety for sports participation
- Prevent potential injuries
- Specific advice for healthy participation
- Establish a health baseline
- Comply with regulations
When Does My Child Need A Sports Physical Exam?
Your child typically needs a sports physical exam before participating in organized sports activities. This exam helps ensure their safety and readiness for physical activity. It’s often required annually by schools, sports leagues, and organizations to assess any health issues that could affect their participation.
Ideally, your child should receive a sports physical exam as part of their annual well-child visit. These yearly check-ups provide Dr. Larson or Dr. Richter with a regular opportunity to evaluate your child’s health, even when they are not experiencing illness or serious health concerns.
What Happens During A Sports Physical Exam?
During a physical exam, our male pediatrician or Heber female pediatrician assesses various aspects of your health. This typically includes:
- Medical History Review: The doctor will ask about the athlete’s medical history, including past or present conditions, surgeries, and family medical history.
- Physical Examination:
- Vital Signs: Measurement of height, weight, blood pressure, and pulse.
- Vision Test: To ensure the athlete can see properly.
- Heart and Lung Check: Listening to the heart and lungs for any abnormalities.
- Abdominal Exam: Checking for organ enlargement or tenderness.
- Musculoskeletal Exam: Assessing the strength, flexibility, joints, and posture.
- Neurological Exam: Testing reflexes, coordination, and balance.
The physical exam can vary based on age, gender, and individual health concerns. The exam helps our pediatricians assess your current health status and identify any potential issues that may require further evaluation or treatment.
